This design Camp Half Blood activity is a creative setting-based project that gives students a chance to explore the layout of Camp Half-Blood using both text evidence and artistic design. As they read chapters 5-7 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, students will analyze how the setting is described and use those details to plan and sketch a 2-D map of the camp. With a structured planning page and a grid-style template, this activity blends close reading with visual thinking and reinforces the importance of the setting in the novel.
This is included in our unit plan for the novel:
>>> The Lightning Thief Unit Plan
Included in The Percy Jackson Design Camp Half-Blood Activity:
➡️ Design of Camp Half-Blood Planning Page: Have students gather quotes from the text and plan out what locations to include in their 2-D design. This page encourages students to cite evidence while making thoughtful artistic choices.
➡️ Design of Camp Half-Blood Teacher Answer Key: Use this completed sample of the planning page to support class discussion, provide inspiration, or assist students as they plan their own evidence-based designs.
➡️ Blank Grid Camp Map Template: Students will use this template to draw their final version of Camp Half-Blood. The grid layout helps guide placement and proportions while encouraging creative expression through color and detail.
How The Percy Jackson Design Camp Half-Blood Activity works:
- Students will begin by analyzing chapters 5-7 of The Lightning Thief to collect quotes that describe the physical layout and key features of Camp Half-Blood. Using this information, they will complete the planning page to organize their ideas and determine what elements to include in their design.
- Next, students will use their notes to begin designing their own version of Camp Half-Blood. They will include areas such as the cabins, the Big House, the campfire, woods, and other locations mentioned in the text—paying close attention to accuracy and creativity.
- To complete the activity, students will transfer their ideas to a final blank grid template, where they will create a clean, polished 2-D layout of the camp using drawings, colors, labels, and visual design choices that reflect details from the novel.
This activity is best used after students have completed Chapter 7 of the novel, once they are familiar with the layout, features, and purpose of different areas within Camp Half-Blood.
